We hunted for elves in the woods of Fairfax- try these great outings!

Fairfax County offers an elf scavenger hunt and a snowflake hunt in the forest!

December 30, 2020

Introducing 3 unique hikes, each with a fun twist!

First there is the elf scavenger hut at Daniels Run.  Here you will find red and white poles with a QR code that will reveal a message from an elf!  The elf gives you clues to find a street sign pointing you an elf workshop hidden in the forest! At the elf workshop, you will find another QR code with a fun riddle.  It sounds involved, but I promise it is not, and I guarantee your kids will love it! You can see some pics in action and more information at their facebook page here. If you put "Daniels Run" into your GPS it will pop up, and you can also enter this address: 3723 Tedrich Blvd, Fairfax, VA 22030, for a good park entrance with street parking. The hunt will be there through January 9th.

Here's an example of a sign that you will be hunting for.

Second, there is a snowflake trail at Cub Run.  Grandmother Frost has lost her gifts for the woodland animals, and it’s your job to help her find the presents as you walk through the forest behind Cub Run RECenter. Videos at stops along the trail lead you to your goal and teach you about the animals in the woods. Find the address and all the details here! The hunt will be there through January 11th.

Third,

Visit the new "Art of Snowflakes" public outdoor art display at Bluemont Park: Developed and painted by Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation’s Community Arts team, these pieces are 8 feet tall and really lovely.  Bonus, they are right next to the Bluemont Junction Trail and the playground at Bluemont Park, so you can pair the visit with a trip to the playground and/or a bike/scooter ride.  I love the one below- it's a snowy take on Van Gogh's "Starry Night"!  Park at the Bluemont Park lot (601 N Manchester St.) and follow the directional signage.
